Children in Worship

By participating in worship, children learn that they belong to Christ and they are welcome in God’s church! By joining in worship, children begin to build a collection of memorable, shared experiences of Christian community and hear stories from the Bible read and interpreted. They learn that worship is a place for them to speak to God and a place where God may speak to them. Children of all ages, even if fidgety or cooing, are welcome in our worship services.

On the first Sunday of the month, children are invited to the altar during the Great Thanksgiving to get a better look at what happens during Holy Communion.

On their way into church, children are welcome to take a “Sunday Paper” coloring packet (located in the Narthex). Based on that week’s Scripture readings, each packet also has a parent page for further discussion and prayer. We encourage you to read this over at home and talk about the lesson of God’s great love with your children. Please return the bag and crayons in the basket on the way out.

A nursery is available from 8:45am - 12:15pm for children birth to 5-years of age.

Safeguarding God’s Children

At St. Andrew’s we are committed to being a loving, caring, diverse and welcoming community of Christian people. As part of our loving and caring, we are strongly committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of the children and youth entrusted to our care. Knowing that Jesus cared particularly for children and acknowledging the promises of our Baptismal Covenant, we will be proactive in our care for the vulnerable.

We will welcome every child and youth regardless of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, origin, ancestry, documentation status or religion. We will ensure everything in our power to ensure that no adult or child is exposed to behavior that is physically, emotionally, spiritually or sexually abusive or harassing at St. Andrew’s and will advocate for those who encounter such behaviors in other settings.

All volunteers who work with children and youth will be required to complete training before working with children and youth, and must re-new this training every 2 years. Additionally, all adults who work with minors will be required to have a background check.

Programs

Sunday School 10:00

Nursery age children use Beulah land—a colorful felt storyboard kit for storytelling and imaginative play.

Children ages 3 to 6 use the Godly Play. Based on Montessori principles and developed using a spiral curriculum, the Godly Play method helps them to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience though wonder and play.

Kids in 3rd through 5th grades use the Connect curriculum to explore major themes in the narrative arc of the Bible, blending solid theology with quirky, age-appropriate humor.

Vacation Bible School

2017 VBS will be July 24–27.

Children are invited to A Peaceable Kingdom—The Peaceable Kingdom is a magical land where everyone loves each other and bullying is coming to an end. We will learn to stand up to others, become our best self, and be brave while creating a place here in God’s Kingdom on Earth for everyone to be loved. Children will be empowered to be peacemakers as we explore anti‐bullying themes through the use of favorite children’s literature characters such as Horton the elephant, Yertle the turtle, Gertrude McFuzz, Mama and Papa Bear, Old Turtle, and Gerald the giraffe.

VBS is free and begins with dinner.

Contact Jennifer Arcuri, our Christian Education Director, for registration at ChristianEd@saots.org.

The children’s choir offers the prelude at the 9:00 service on the first Sunday of the month.

Wednesday Dinners
